"Telehealth is just not the same as in-person!" Yes, therapy in person is not the same as therapy online. You live in a world that is hyper-saturated with screen time and you just need something that feels...real.
I believe people's main concern with telehealth is a real human connection. Can it be the same online? Telehealth works for my clients. I believe a real connection is going to depend on my genuineness, transparency and empathy. I think that you will find that the focus and attention of a good therapist is not dependent on a virtual or in-person space. When we meet face-to-face in telehealth, our micro expressions are now directly in a shared field of vision. It can feel surprisingly more intimate, and more focused. A good therapeutic relationship is going to come from engagement and skill.
The other advantages of online therapy are undeniable: you are no longer burdened with traffic, traveling, transport, and small town scarcity. All the time saved means you can manage your busy schedule more flexibly and adjust to your therapist's availability better. Some of my clients simply cannot afford to arrange childcare, or to take time off work. Other clients feel anxious in social spaces and dread encountering others in an office. Virtual appointments mean you can feel safe, less stressed and more comfortable.
Telehealth requires a device, a stable connection and privacy. People who struggle with electronic communication, may find in-person appointments a better fit.
