Online therapy can require an adjustment if you are used to face-to-face therapy. It may initially feel a little more remote, but also surprisingly more intense. Nuanced facial expressions are now directly in your field of vision, and the camera lens excludes the full extent of the room. A remote connection is not as natural as meeting in person, but it is very focused, and that can actually lead to more effortful participation. A good therapeutic relationship is built on genuineness, transparency and empathy. I believe it is enhanced, not hindered, by technology.
The advantages of online therapy are real: you can access therapy with me from anywhere in the state of Texas, Arizona or Florida and you don't have to live where I do, you can avoid transport and commuting issues, you can secure the safety of your body, you can calm your social anxiety, you can protect your privacy, you can enjoy the proximity of your pets, and enjoy the convenience of your hoodie and unwashed hair.
The only requirement for online therapy is a stable Internet connection. The quality of your experience can improve dramatically if you can do therapy in a private space without distractions, and preferably not on a hand-held device that requires physical effort.
